Sometimes you meet someone who says exactly the right thing at exactly the right moment.
Over the past few weeks, I have mainly been occupied with a simple question: what do I actually want my website to be? Of course, I show photographs there. It contains stories. Kashikiku has found a place in it. Every now and then, a duck, a dashboard or a camper appears. And yet, to me, it does not feel like a collection of unrelated subjects.
I was looking for the common thread.
Then John Hegarty appeared. One of the biggest names in advertising. His best-known line is simple:
When the world zigs, zag.
That stayed with me.
Not because you necessarily have to be different. Being different for its own sake is rarely interesting. But because sometimes you have to take a step sideways to see something that remains invisible from the beaten path.
I recognise that.
As a photographer, I regularly walk a few metres farther than everyone else. Not to be difficult, but because the light falls slightly differently there. Because someone stops posing for a moment. Because the real image is often not found in the middle of the crowd.
The same thing happens in logistics. Everyone looks at today’s schedule. I wonder what the schedule will look like next week. Not because I am smarter, but because I like looking ahead.
And in fact, the same applies to Kashikiku. Computers are excellent at following a straight line. People are good at making unexpected connections. That is precisely where creativity emerges.
Perhaps that is why my website does not feel like a portfolio. It is more like a landscape. You can begin with a portrait and end up at a story about a duck. Or travel through an article about logistics and arrive at a book about looking slowly.
To me, that makes sense.
Curiosity does not have to lead to getting lost. It can also lead to discovery. Sometimes you only see how the puzzle fits together once you stop trying to arrange everything in a straight line.
Perhaps that is my way of looking.
Not left. Not right.
Every now and then, simply… zig zag.
