Baardmannen
I wanted to know what would happen if I kept doing the same thing.
The same setup. The same light. Coffee first. Then all my attention for the man in front of my camera.
It began with fifty
It became
two hundred.
On 21 January 2014, I began a project involving men only. Men with character, preferably with a beard. The plan was to use the same studio setup fifty times and discover what repetition would do to my photography.
After one hundred portraits, I had seen enough of the studio. I made the second half outdoors. Men from Friesland, the rest of the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium found their way to the project.
The beard was not an answer. Behind it was simply a different person every time.
My first book · 2016
Everyone included.
The call for a book kept growing. One thing was certain to me: not just a selection, but all two hundred men deserved a place.
Baardmannen became a 152-page hardcover photobook. It was designed by Eric Jongsma and Arjen Doting of Sprog—proud beard wearers themselves—and published by Het Mooiste Boek.
